Superior craftsmanship. From conventional printing to digital printing, Burton & Mayer has a solution that's right for you...

Offset lithography is the most popular type of printing process. Unlike other types of printing, offset involves printing from a flat surface. It basically works on the principle that oil and water do not mix. The conventional printing plate holds ink because the image area is treated so that it is receptive to oil-based ink but not to water.

Our Print Process

Chemically treating the plate assures receptiveness to oil-based ink, naturally repelling water in the process. Burton & Mayer prints using state-of-the-art Komori, and Shinohara sheet-fed presses. Sheet sizes range from 8 1/2" x 11" to large format 29 1/8" x 41 11/32". Each color press has a separate print head for each ink that is being printed with up to 8 inks being able to be applied in succession. As the paper passes through the press, ink rollers evenly apply a thin coat of naturally greasy ink to the plate, which is mounted on a rotating cylinder. When the press starts, the plate comes in contact with water rollers, keeping the non-treated area of the plate wet, naturally resistant to ink.

The offsetting step occurs when a rubber blanket (now pressed against the printing plate) imprints a reversed image on the plate. As the individual sheets of paper pass between the rubber blanket and the impression cylinder, the inked blanket cylinder carrying the now reversed image, presses against the paper, printing a positive image.
